After much anticipation, the remastered edition of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion has finally arrived. This updated version brings a fresh look and some significant gameplay tweaks, providing both longtime fans and new players with a modern way to dive into Bethesda’s classic game, nearing its 20th anniversary. It’s reassuring to know that this overhaul hasn’t stripped away any of the original’s quirky charm, especially those memorable NPC voice lines we’ve all come to love.
During the April 22 reveal broadcast, Bethesda Game Studios director Tom Mustaine reflected on the past while holding up a vintage Xbox 360 copy of the game. “Back when Oblivion first hit the shelves, disc space limitations meant we couldn’t create unique voiceovers for every race,” he explained. “Now, we’ve gone back and recorded new dialogue. Every race in the game now has its own distinct sounds. Of course, we made sure to keep all of the… more eccentric dialogue intact.”
Bethesda and the developers at Oblivion Remastered’s studio, Virtuos, shared some examples of these changes. Among the highlights is a favorite quote often delivered by the beloved Sheogorath, the eccentric god at the heart of the Shivering Isle expansion. Wes Johnson, the voice behind Sheogorath, assassin Lucien Lachance, and several other iconic characters, made a guest appearance on the Oblivion Remastered stream—adorable puppy in hand—to share anecdotes from his time on the project. While we all eagerly await our journey back to the land of Cyrodiil, the ongoing broadcast is well worth a listen as you get set up.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is now available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Moreover, it’s included in the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate library, giving subscribers easy access to revisit this beloved universe.
