“Soul Paint” offers an intriguing blend of virtual reality and self-discovery by immersing users in 3D art. Released at SXSW 2024, this innovative project by Sarah Ticho and Niki Smit features narration by Rosario Dawson. It’s designed to help participants engage with their emotions by interacting with a virtual 3D environment. Imagine stepping into an ethereal dimension where you can paint directly onto your virtual self, shaping your emotional journey.
Using a combination of body mapping and VR, Soul Paint encourages exploration and heightened self-awareness. The creators aim to nurture empathy and a sense of connection by allowing users to share their experiences and emotions with others at the end of their session.
I had the chance to experience Soul Paint firsthand for 20 minutes at the NewImages Festival 2025. The journey kicks off with a thought-provoking query: “Where are you feeling?” Initially uncertain about my answer, I soon found the experience taking on a reflective, almost spiritual quality. This immersive world invites you to express yourself through movement and art.
As I navigated this calming space, I found a sense of relaxation and introspection capturing me. Although I wouldn’t call myself an artist—my creations weren’t masterpieces—what mattered was the personal journey. You can illustrate your virtual body and leave a voice message, a meaningful way to convey emotions when words fall short.
Soul Paint acts as a virtual mirror, providing a unique avenue for self-expression and connection. While the experience is somewhat linear, it offers a profound sense of presence and player agency. Its depth might be limited, but the thoughtful and meditative experience makes a lasting impact. Hopefully, we’ll see more of these inventive experiences in the future.
As of now, a home release for Soul Paint hasn’t been announced. Rest assured, we’ll keep you updated with any developments.
