Larian Studios “Deep in Development” on Next Major Game After Baldur’s Gate 3

With the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 8, Larian Studios has wrapped up its journey with this RPG. While the team may roll out some bug fixes from time to time, they’ve made it clear that this patch is the final piece of additional content for the D&D game. Now, the developers are shifting focus to what’s next, diving into two new projects simultaneously. Although it might be a while before we get a glimpse of these games, Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke, assures us that development is moving along nicely.

Currently, we’re in the dark about Larian’s next ventures. They had initially begun working on a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 but decided to pivot towards something fresh and original. What that entails remains a mystery. Personally, I’m crossing my fingers for a sci-fi RPG—seeing Larian’s mastery of fantasy applied to a new genre would be thrilling.

Whatever these projects are, Vincke is optimistic that they’ll rival—or maybe even surpass—Baldur’s Gate 3 in scope and ambition.

In a recent chat with GameSpot, Vincke shared, “We’re deep in the trenches working on our next big thing. It’s shaping up quite well, actually, but it’s crazy ambitious. There are so many new things we can do these days, so it’s complex.”

He went on to discuss the challenge of managing two games at once: “We’ve talked openly about working on two games. Organizing everything is not the simplest task, given the intricate and player-driven nature of our games. Pinning down a completion date is tough.”

Vincke noted that Larian isn’t looking to expand significantly but is strategizing on how to leverage their talents across both projects. However, with two major games underway, things are rarely straightforward, so we’ll have to wait and see which game emerges first.
