Counter-Strike, in VR, huh? Yeah, that’s happening. So there’s a bunch of VR shooters out there trying real hard to be like the classic Counter-Strike. I mean, seriously, who isn’t? Anyway, the cool kids over at Team Beef are doing something wild — they’re bringing the OG Counter-Strike to Quest and Pico headsets. Like, the real deal. Unofficially, of course, but who cares, right?
And this isn’t their first rodeo. Team Beef has already dragged Tomb Raider, Duke Nukem 3D, Prey, and even Quake 4 into the VR world. (Why they did it? No clue. Probably because they could, or maybe just for the nostalgia trip.)
Right, so I was saying — they’re cooking up an unofficial port for Counter-Strike 1.6. You remember that one, right? It’s like the ultimate version of the Half-Life mod that turned into a proper game back in 2000. Steam days, good times.
So, Team Beef is doing this with some fancy tech stuff — latest Xash3D FWGS engine, I think? It’s got compatibility with Valve’s GoldSrc engine, which is basically the Half-Life engine. I won’t pretend to understand all that, but sounds legit enough. And Velaron’s multiplatform client is in the mix too. Whatever that means.
Oh, another thing. They promise cross-play and some “easy server creation directly from inside VR” — whatever that entails. It’s supposed to support full 6DoF motion controls at some point. Fingers crossed.
When can you try this trippy VR port? Early access is coming “very soon” if you’re part of their Patreon crew. They even have a teaser out for a prototype. Spoiler: no 6DoF controls yet, but hey, baby steps.
Okay, I’m done rambling. Go check it out if you’re into VR and blasting your way down memory lane. Or not. Up to you.
